La Silla ear vs. Milky Way ear
The ESO’s
La Silla observatory is one of the most photogenic place for astro-photography in the world. This image seems to be total prove. On the horizon, there is the road between
Swedish submillimeter “ear” (left), listening to the Universe, and the hill with the dome of
3.6m telescope (right). Up above the dome you can spot the faint
Gegenschein just surrounding bright the planet Jupiter. A reddish and greenish
airglow adds colorful diversity of the view in the Universe up above the observatory. Despite majestic
Magellanic clouds or the pink emission hydrogen nebulae, the most photogenic is the
Milky Way itself, which seems in this projection like the ear of the Universe, gently listening to us as we are listening to that. Who will hear anything first? Us or something somewhere there? Well, this question is more less poetic, but La Silla has really this kind of magic. Image was captured during my visitation of the observatory as
ESO Photo Ambassador on 21st January 2015. Usen Canon 6D IR Baader Mod, Samyang 24 mm, f2.8, ISO 10000, 43×15 sec. panorama.
