A ghosts of oxygen

A ghosts of oxygen

Moving on, second half of June I spent in Hastings. Kind of retro city offers amazing hills just a few minutes drive from the center. Hill called Te Mata peak (by maori language “the peak of Sleeping giant”) is almost 400 meters above sea level and there is a view to east and south just to Pacific ocean over the valley. If you stay after sunset, it’s like a window to the universe. Especially in the evening on 17th June 2014, when I took also my sister and lovely brazil traveler Elisa to enjoy the night sky. We had to hide because of very strong wind and the temperature was low, but the moments there were amazing. Despite majestic view to the center of Milky way and both Magellanic clouds I discovered on my pictures very strong red airglow covering basically all the sky. Red color is caused by luminiscence of O2 and OH molecules. Used Canon 6D, Sigma 15 mm, f2.8, ISO 8000, 11×30 s panorama, tripod.

Just for another perspective I created panoramatic image showing red airglow as mystic fingers of some ghosts. Well, literally we can speak about a ghosts, shining prove of luminiscenting oxygen molecules… Used Canon 6D, Sigma 15 mm, f3.5, ISO 8000, 6×20 s panorama; tripod.
